I am Senior Lecturer in International Relations (IR). My research interests are in IR theory and in the role of ideas, norms and identities in international relations. I focus in particular on the complex interactions between liberal and non-liberal ideas, actors and practices in world politics.
This interest manifests in two parallel research agendas. The first concentrates on the role of religion in world politics. I am currently working on a new book project exploring the entanglements between religions, states, and power. My first book Finding Faith in Foreign Policy: Religion and American Diplomacy in a Postsecular World (Oxford University Press: 2019), explored how US foreign policymakers have increasingly sought to understand and manage global religious dynamics since the end of the Cold War. The book has received two honorable mentions, from the International Studies Association (2020) and from the European Academy of Religion (2019).
My second main research agenda focuses on the challenges posed by authoritarian powers and populism in the West to international order. In particular my research has explored how authoritarians and populists mobilize illiberal norms and civilizational identities to contest key aspects of the liberal international order.
Another overarching area of interest is in the theory, sociology, and pedagogy of International Relations.
Previously to joining Exeter, I was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow (2012-2014) at the European University Institute (EUI). I obtained my PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2012.
