Politics Society off to Great Start

We asked Katie Austreng, General Secretary of the Politics Society for an update on activities.

"The Politics Society has got off to a great start this term, boasting record numbers of members and retaining our title as one of the biggest (and best) academic societies on campus. The first half of term has seen some fantastic aca-demic and social events. We have been proud to host Martha Wilkinson - CEO of the Devon Community Foundation, and Baroness Joyce Quin for two stimulating talks. We have been lucky enough to hold two career’s workshops on Political Speechwriting with an expert in political communications, Jon Cayzer, and in political interviewing, with BBC Journalist Oscar Pearson, both of which were booked out within hours and have been a resounding success in offer-ing careers insight and networking opportunity to PolSoc members.

After Reading Week, we are looking forward to more tantalising talks including one from Lindsey Hislum, the Chan-nel 4 International Editor, speaking on the Syrian conflict. Also in November, Lord Tyler, a Lib Dem Peer, will be speaking under our ‘State of the Union’ lecture series on a range of topical questions such as constitutional reform and referendums.

We are also pleased to announce that the Politics Society will be fully engaging with Parliament Week which runs from Monday 16th – Friday 20th November. We will host an array of events to fill the week. In particular, we are looking forward to invoking our inner Dimbleby when we chair an all-female party debate: we have invited all the political societies on campus to provide a female spokesperson to repre-sent their party in a debate on current affairs and topical political problems. Another highlight of this week is to be a workshop with Murray McKirdle, who is the assistant to our very own Exeter MP, Ben Bradshaw. Murray will be providing an insight into the scenes of Westminster, as well as offering advice on finding jobs in Politics.
