Social problems prompt social solutions, such as policy interventions to fight crime, mitigate climate change, or reduce social inequality. But how do we know which policies work, and which do not? In this module, we will learn and practice methods for evaluating interventions across multiple fields of social science and policy. After reviewing the fundamentals of causal inference, our focus will be on introducing a range of experimental and quasi-experimental approaches to quantitative policy evaluation. Through hands-on examples, we will learn how to apply these methods to policy analysis – and how to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence. We will consider numerous practical examples of policy evaluations, both in the UK and internationally.
