This course provides an overview of contemporary themes in political thought with a particular focus on anti-oppression politics. Topics covered will include new forms of capitalism embodied in tech startups, the “sharing” economy (uber, Airbnb, taskrabbit); trans and queer theory; sexual harassment and violence on campus; contemporary American social movements such as Black Lives Matter; struggles for indigenous sovereignty and land rights by First Nations peoples; political movements to reduce carbon emissions; and new alternatives to current political systems. The course is designed to equip you with the intellectual tools to identify and unmask contemporary forms of social and political power. Students will be introduced to different modes of critique within queer theory, post-Marxism, critical race studies, poststructuralism and postcolonialism.
