This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the main theories of global development. We will situate these theories in their historical context, looking at the core debates that have emerged around development from the early 20th century through to the current period. As part of this, you will gain an understanding of how development theory is situated in broader social science debates. The course is inter-disciplinary in nature, encompassing politics, political economy, sociology, and anthropology. Some of the main topics we will examine include: poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment; the role of institutions and power in shaping development processes; gender; aid and structural adjustment; migration and displacement; the impact of environment and climate change; race; and violence and conflict.
