About the research

Professor Isabelle Engeli and Dr Florian Stoeckel are involved in the project PUSH*BACK*LASH which inquires into the present-day contestation of gender equality issues and policies at both elite and citizen levels in EuropeThe project will run from January 2023 until December 2025 and is funded by a Horizon grant from the European Commission as well as funds from the UKRI (total funding: € 2,990,312; EU grant agreement 101061687, UKRI grant agreement 10038117).

The project approaches democracy from a global feminist perspective and employs a comparative, multimethod research design. It acknowledgeintersections between gender and other social categories and brings together a transdisciplinary, gender-diverse consortium of people from different spheres (academics, activists, think tanks). The project is coordinated by Professor Zoe Lefkofridi at Paris-Lodron-Universität Salzburg (Austria). The other partners are: University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), GESIS (Germany), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), Gender Five Plus (Belgium), Technical University Dresden (Germany), University of Valencia (Spain), Humanity In Action Poland (Poland), Theater of the oppressed, Wien (Austria) as well as YouGov and the University of Exeter (UK).

Dr Stoeckel will lead a quantitative-empirical Work Package at the University of Exeter. He will work closely with several partner institutions on the development of surveys that measure citizens’ attitudes towards gender equality and diversity, as well as experiments that examine causality (e.g. the effects of anti-gender discourses, the effectiveness of counter strategies). The survey fieldwork will be conducted in eight European countries in collaboration with the company partner YouGov.
