In recent years, we have witnessed serious political and social turmoil in the Middle East, including the civil war in Syria, the rise of so-called Islamic State, the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict, and violent sectarianism. This module poses the question of how do we account for the region's recent upheavals? Through the lens of International Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies scholarship, this module will enable you to critically analyse the causes, origins, dynamics and governance of violence and conflict in the region across political, social, ideological, cultural and economic dimensions. Through interactive and participatory lectures and seminars, we will apply a variety of analytical, conceptual and theoretical tools to develop a systematic understanding of the dynamics of some inter-state, intra-state as well as inter-ethnic and inter-sectarian conflicts in the Middle East.
No prior knowledge skills or experience are required to take this module. The module is suitable for specialist and non-specialist students.
