Has the European Union created a regulatory state in Europe? What are the political implications of market regulation and the Eurozone? How is the single market governed? Do we live in a "neo-liberal" or "dirigiste" Europe? Is the single market a talisman, a myth, or just a complex web of social and economic relations that has to be governed? And finally has Europeanization gone too far, what has it delivered for citizens? These questions define the political economy of Europe. The module will provide the conceptual tools to explain and appraise the politics of regulation and the single market, introduce you to the current debates on European modes of governance, and discuss options for the future of countries like the UK in a changing Europe.
