Prospective students

We're delighted to welcome new students on to our degree programmes each year, and below you can find information that may be useful to you when preparing for the start of one of our degrees.

 

Entry Requirements

There are no requirements to hold either Maths A-Level or Core Maths A-Level in order to join our undergraduate programmes. The Centre for Computational Social Science (C2S2) programmes are built on the principle that students do not require a background in Maths to take them. This is because our programmes take a pratical, applied, approach to teaching social data science, which doesn't require in-depth mathematical knowledge. Instead, we focus on developing methods skills in conjunction with in-depth knowledge and understanding of social phenomena in order to produce the next generation of computational social scientists who are uniquely positioned from this dual speciality to tackle the biggest issues in the modern world.

Strong support alongside dedicated practice time in labs forms a central part of our approach, and enables our students to become highly competent, and confident, in computational methods.

Personal laptops and tablets

It is worth noting that if you have a Chromebook or similar then you may not have the necessary memory and/or processing power to use this when doing work associated with our core modules. However, please note that PCs will be available to you to use on campus should you wish.

 

Facilities

Most teaching of our core modules are carried out in our state-of-the-art Computational Computer Lab in the Clayden Building (pictured below).
