Regulating Digital Democracy

On 5-6 May 2022, Sandra Kröger and colleagues from the University of Hamburg, Copenhagen, Lleiden, Amsterdam and Exeter met in Hamburg, Germany, to discuss the possibility of developing a project on Regulating Digital Democracy. Recent developments have shown the need for, and the increasing openness to, regulating digital democracy. But exactly what type of regulation is required is controverse and an object of fierce academic and political debate. In this context, scholars from four European Universities have come together to discuss such the concepts of digital democracy, digital sovereignty, and demos scraping, and the issues of digital epistemologies and algorithms and their proneness to injustices, as well as the need for content moderation. After two days of intense discussions, the team is now exploring how to best move forward.
